Using free meditation music is a great way to start
Meditation has a mystical aura to it. Most people that have never meditated thinks of Budhist monks and a painful process of concentration. A lot of people don't realize that there is a lot of free meditation music available which could get you starting if meditation is what you want to do. What you first need to understand is why you want to meditate. People don't have enough knowledge about what meditation does in order to know why they want to meditate.
So let's first look at what meditation does
Meditation essentially helps the mind to be quiet. Quiet from what, you might ask. If you've read Eckhart Tolle you will know that as humans we have a subconscious (which animals don't have), which contains the human ego. The ego is the brain's self-image i.e. the mental images the brain (subconscious) use to find meaning to all the sensory stimuli experiences daily. This ego, continuously has generates a stream of thoughts from which it is trying to gain meaning with the external world. Remember the subconsicous cannot discern the difference between a thought (mental image) about food or real sensory input from food. So the ego is continously in dialogue, really with itself trying to assess danger, desire, etc. It is only the cerebral cortex (which makes unique as humans) where we can rationally assess whether a stimulus is really a danger or whether it just reminded the ego (residing in the pre-historic or animal brain) of a similar situation of danger in the past.
So how will this free meditation music help you?. Meditation (and you can use some of this free meditation music to assist) helps your cerebral cortex or rational brain to disconnect from the stream of thoughts generated by the ego. I am not sure whether the actual stream of thoughts quieten down or whether the cerebral cortex is just able to "switch off" from the ego's channel (I think EKG tests show it actually quietens down). Whichever way it happens, the mind is now quiet from the stream of thoughts generated by the ego. This is what Eckhart Tolle calls being in the NOW and while he means experiencing this 24/7, meditation is good place to start experiencing this for the first time. What actually happens is you are in perfect touch with consciousness. Being in touch with consciousness in its purest form of being.
Here's what Deepak Chopra says about meditation: "Meditation is not a way of making your mind quiet. It is a way of entering into the quiet that is already there - buried under the 50,000 thoughts the average person thinks every day." The quiet that he refers to here is consciousness
How can I meditate without this free meditation music
While the free meditation music will be very helpful, you can also meditate without music (mostly once you understand what this presence or consciousness feels like). So how do you do this?
1. Find a comfortable position
2. Close your eyes and slows your breathing
3. While breathing, bring your attention to your breath as you inhale and exhale rhytmically
4. If you find your mind wondering to thoughts or you fall asleep, gently bring your attention back to noticing your breath
5. Do this for 10, 20 or 30 minutes
What are you actaully doing? You are connecting to consciousness. Now that you have a greater understanding of what meditation is and does, enjoy this set of free meditation music
The defining characteristic of meditation is conscious breathing.
Here's what Dr. Andrew Weil says about conscious breathing:
The single most effective relaxation technique I know is conscious
regulation of breath.
In many languages - the words for spirit and breath
are one and the same
(Sanskrit prana, Hebrew ruach, Greek pneuma,
Latin spiritus). Breathing is the bridge between mind and body, the connection between
consciousness and unconsciousness, the movement of spirit in matter.
Breath is the key to health and wellness, a function we can learn to
regulate and develop in order to improve our physical, mental and
spiritual well-being.
Breathing is special in several respects: it is the only function you
can perform consciously as well as unconsciously, and it can be a
completely voluntary act or a completely involuntary act, as it is
controlled by two sets of nerves, one belonging to the voluntary nervous
system, the other to the involuntary (autonomic) system. Breath is the
bridge between these two systems.
.
Most people do not know how to breathe so as to take full advantage of
the nourishing, health-giving properties of the act of breathing.
Knowing how to perform simple breathing techniques can help lower your
blood pressure, calm a racing heart, or help your digestive system
without taking drugs. Breathing has direct connections to emotional
states and moods - observe someone who is angry, afraid or otherwise
upset, and you will see a person breathing rapidly, shallowly, noisily
and irregularly. You cannot be upset if your breathing is slow, deep,
quiet and regular.
You cannot always center yourself emotionally by an
act of will, but you can use your voluntary nerves to make your
breathing slow, deep, quiet and regular, and the rest will follow.

I have put a collection of meditation mp3's together in this zip file. There is one interesting file from Optamind, which sounds like rain. The company claims that it adjust your brain waves to arrive at that point of quiet sooner. Enjoy!
Additional Meditation tools
Meditation timers
Sometimes you have time constraints and don't need to allow thoughts about time to kreep into your quiet. Meditation timers are very helpful to set the time you have availalbe so that you can relax and enjoy your meditation
Meditation chairs
Many people find that they get uncomfortable while meditating. Having a dedicated and comfortable meditation chair will again enhance your ability to keep your attention on your breathing and body rather than on external factors, which will trigger your mind to run away with thoughts.
Meditation pillow
If a chair is not what you enjoy, then sitting on a comfortable cushion may just be what you need.
Meditation guides and meditation scripts
A lot of people like to repeat a mantra (normally a sanskrit word of no meaning) or read a sentence of a meditation guide or meditation script.
Meditation postures and meditation positions
There are so many myths about sitting in the lotus position as the ultimate toward achieving the mentail quietness. This is just not true, but there are certain meditation postures and meditation positions that people find more comfortable. Being comfortable is really all that matters.
